Pool water looking dull or cloudy? Here's what to do

← Back to Services

Your pool water should be sparkling and crystal clear. If it's looking dull, hazy or cloudy, here are five simple things to check.

  1. Check your chlorine levels

Low chlorine can allow bacteria and algae to develop, making your water look dull. Test your water and ensure your chlorine levels are appropriate.

  2. Balance your water chemistry

Incorrect pH, alkalinity or calcium hardness can affect water clarity. Aim for a pH of around 7.2–7.6 and have your water professionally tested if necessary.

  3. Clean your pool filter

A dirty or inefficient filter can leave fine particles suspended in the water. Backwash your sand filter or clean your cartridge filter as required, and check your filter pressure.

  4. Improve circulation

Make sure your pump is running long enough to properly circulate and filter the water. Brush the pool walls and floor to help your filtration system remove fine debris.

  5. Consider a pool clarifier

If your water chemistry and filtration are correct but the water still looks dull, a suitable pool clarifier can help your filter capture fine suspended particles. Always follow the product instructions.

Top tip: Don't wait until your pool turns green! Dull water can be an early warning sign that your pool needs attention.
